Premier League
The Title
After Manchester City’s chaotic 3-3 draw away at Everton, it is once again Arsenal’s title to lose. Beat West Ham away, Burnley at home (already relegated) and Crystal Palace away (European final in focus with nothing to play for domestically), and Mikel Arteta will finally be crowned a Premier League Champion, after 3 consecutive 2nd place finishes. Pep’s men can only hope for imperfection from their title rivals, otherwise a clean sweep of Brentford, Palace, Bournemouth and Aston Villa won’t matter at all.
The Drop
Wolves are down. Burnley are down. The fight to avoid 18th place is largely down to London duo West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur, who currently (MW35/38) sit on 36 and 37 points respectively. Clubs such as Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace remain mathematically unsafe, but ultimately, there will be one 60,000+ seater stadium in the second division next season. Tottenham have picked up since De Zerbi’s appointment, much to West Ham’s dismay. Spurs must play Leeds, Chelsea, Everton, whilst West Ham have Arsenal, Newcastle and Leeds United too.
Bundesliga
The Title
You guessed it. Bayern Munich already have their 34th league title locked, but the Weißbierdusche celebrations must wait until their season is complete, with a DFB-Pokal final against Stuttgart on the horizon. After their UCL semi final defeat to PSG, Kompany’s men will have to settle for the domestic double this season.
The Drop
Heidenheim are all but down on 23 points, which leaves an incredible fight between St. Pauli and never-before relegated Wolfsburg. But wait, it gets better. After Matchweek 33 where St. Pauli travel to RB Leipzig and Wolfsburg welcome Bayern Munich, both teams face each other on the final day of the season. The losers will be relegated, the winners will play a relegation playoff against a hungry 2. Bundesliga side: Elversberg, Hannover or Paderborn.
La Liga
The Title
After Real Madrid’s catastrophic collapse, Barcelona have taken the title back to the Camp Nou, well, almost. They can mathematically win the league in their next fixture with a win or a draw. The fixture in question? El Clásico. For the first time in Spanish football history, the title can be won in its most glorified game. This one will be even sweeter for The Catalans.
The Drop
With newcomers Real Oviedo sat in 20th and Levante 4 points adrift in 19th, it’s an ever-changing bottom half of the La Liga table this season. 12th to 18th place share a gap of just 3 points. Spanish giants Valencia and Sevilla are amongst the endangered clubs, where final form is all that matters at the conclusion of the Spanish top-flight season.
Serie A
The Title
Inter Milan wrapped up the Scudetto with a 2-0 win against Parma, marking their 3rd title in 6 years. The inconsistencies of rivals AC Milan and Napoli have crowned manager Cristian Chivu as Italian Champion, who becomes the first foreign manager since José Mourinho in 2010 to win Serie A.
The Drop
Newly-promoted Pisa finish rock-bottom, Hellas Verona will join them in Serie B next season, whilst 18th place remains a fight between Cremonese and Lecce, with the latter team very much in the driver’s seat, 4 points clear of their relegation rivals. Fiorentina look to have survived their early-season scare, which saw many believing they were guaranteed to play second division football next season.
Ligue 1
The Title
Unfortunately for the neutral, Lens title challenge has fallen short, as PSG look certain to be crowned champions for yet another year. It was a valiant effort from Pierre Sage’s men, however Luis Enrique’s UCL winning side and back-to-back finalists, just couldn’t be stopped.
The Drop
Metz? Down. Nantes? Practically down. That leaves us with AJ Auxerre in 16th with 28 points and OGC Nice in 15th with 31 points. Next game? That’s right, Auxerre host Nice in a must-win game to avoid the relegation playoff place. Nice’s goal difference is currently 9 better than Auxerre, meaning the INEOS-owned side will be safe with a draw against their drop-zone foes. Whoever leaves the season in 16th place will play against the winner of the Ligue 2 playoffs, to save their spot in the top-flight of French football.
