Eduard Löwen: A Rewarding Return

St Louis City star Eduard Löwen scored just minutes after coming on for his first appearance of the season, after his wife’s unfortunate passing.

After a period of Sorare scouting for the new MLS season, I came across Eduard Löwen, a phenomenally performing midfielder with a large gap of absence since the conclusion of last season, but now with a single showing off the bench and a goal to go along with it:

What I thought was a simple injured talisman story turned into an incredible read, about strength, community and family. Löwen’s wife, Ilona, was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2024, causing the German midfielder to take a leave of absence from the squad. After two years battling, conditions worsened and Ilona’s life was sadly lost on March 9th 2026. The entire league has taken the time to mourn the loss and support the exceptional strength shown by the entire Löwen family.

Edu Löwen returned to the team on their trip to Seattle in their 8th league game of the season, where despite losing 4-0, Löwen took to the pitch in the 89th minute, netting a great strike in injury time and marking his return to the MLS in the best way possible.
